American Gold Eagle Coin BU (Random Year)

Product Details

The most popular gold coin for sale at the United States Mint is the American Gold Eagle. Introduced in 1986, the Gold Eagle Series offers four weights to investors and collectors each year. Like its Silver Eagle counterpart, the Gold Eagle recently received its first design overhaul in mid-2021.

Coin Highlights:
• Available in 4 sizes
• Face value: $50, $25, $10, and $5 USD, fully backed by the US government.
• Eligible for Precious Metals IRA.
• Obverse: Modified from Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ famous Gold Double Eagle design, which depicts Lady Liberty walking confidently against the sun’s rays.
• Reverse: The original Type 1 Reverse, utilized from 1986-2021, displays a male American bald eagle in flight bringing an olive branch to his nest, where a female waits with their young. The Type 2 reverse, introduced in 2021, features a striking close-up portrait of the American bald eagle.

In 1986, the United States Mint introduced the American Gold Eagle Coins in BU and Proof versions. The BU version of the coin was the only one to offer all four weights in the first year, with 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz gold. The proof fractional-ounce series was launched in 1987 and 1988.

Originally, the American Gold Eagles were available with Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ historic Lady Liberty design on the Obverse and a family of bald eagles on the reverse. In mid-2021, the United States Mint introduced a new design from Jennie Norris. The image features the head of the eagle in left-profile relief.

Obverse design elements on the 2023 American Gold Eagle Coin include the historic 1907 design of Lady Liberty by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. This visual shows Liberty’s full-length figure in front-facing relief. She is depicted walking toward the viewer with a torch raised overhead in her right hand and an olive branch in her left hand.

Reverse visuals on the 2023 1 oz Gold Eagle Coin showcase the image of the American bald eagle. Introduced in mid-2021, this new design comes from Jennie Norris and is her first contribution to a major US Mint coin. This refreshing new take on the bald eagle hones in on the extreme focus of the aerial predator, with the head of the eagle shown in left-profile relief as its steely gaze is fixed on the distance.
