The Peace Silver Dollar was designed by Anthony de Francisci, who at the young age of 34 had only created models for the Maine Centennial Commemorative Half Dollar. His wife Teresa was his privileged model. Teresa recounted a childhood day while immigrating to America; the boat passed the Statue of Liberty and she proudly struck Lady Liberty’s pose, and frequently continued to do so. Her heart was broken when she was overlooked to play Lady Liberty for a school function. Modeling for the Peace Dollar was her childhood dream coming true.

One Philadelphia newspaper commented:

“Liberty is getting younger. Take it from the new ‘Peace Dollar,’ put in circulation yesterday, the young woman who has been adorning silver currency for many years, never looked better than in the ‘cart wheel’ that the Philadelphia Mint has just started to turn out. The young lady, moreover, has lost her Greek profile. Hellenic beauty seems to have been superseded by the newer ‘flapper’ type.”

The reverse side of the coin was chosen from two designs submitted by Francisci. It depicts a peaceful – yet watchful eagle standing on a rock with the word PEACE carved into it. The eagle stands on an olive branch with the rays of the sun rising from below.
